Raku is an ancient quick firing method that originated in Japan during the mid-16th century. It is fun and exciting way to experience making and firing pottery in an unconventional, hands on way. This is a great experience with family or friends.
2 Day Raku Workshop
Two four-hour workshop sessions with a week in between.
The first session will be devoted to a basic understanding of the history of Raku pottery. We will then create two pieces of pottery. These pots will be left to dry then bisque fired to ready for the second session. we will be glazing and firing them in the Raku Kiln.
The second session will be spent glazing the pottery, loading and firing the kiln. Once the firing is complete, the red-hot pieces are removed from the kiln and placed in small galvanized garbage cans lined with paper. The paper bursts into flames and the lid is quickly put on the can. Then we wait for them to cool down to open the cans and see the results. The pieces then need to be gently cleaned up with water.

Includes all materials, clay, glazes, firing, and use of safety gear. Dates and times will be determined when participants are registered.
1 Day Raku Workshop
Six hour workshop where participants bring their own bisque ware.
This session will include Horse Hair Firing. Participation is limited in order to experience both Raku and Horse Hair Fire and allowing participants more room in the kiln.
Registration fee: $250
Includes all materials, glazes, firing, and use of safety gear. If you require a bisque fire for your pots there is a fee which will be determined by how many pieces are fired. Dates and times will be determined when participants are registered.
What to Bring
Bring hair ties for long hair, an old small towel, an apron if you want, and make sure to trim long fingernails. They really get in the way while working with clay.
Safety
Safety is the utmost importance! I will be teaching and stressing the safety protocol around Raku firing and will have all supplies necessary for the process.
- It is important that you wear closed toed shoes.
- Tie hair back.
- Wear cotton clothing and long pants. Do not wear polyester or synthetic fabrics.

Cancellation. Things happen and if there is a need to cancel you may do so and you will receive a credit for the amount already paid to go towards a future class to be used within one year. I am unable to offer rescheduling for missed classes.
